Cruelty-Free Cosmetics

Is Your Makeup Bag Cruelty Free

Guess what I should be doing right now? Homework. Guess what I’m not doing right now? Homework.

I’ll get to it….eventually.

But in the meantime, I wanted to write another post regarding animal testing. I’ve mentioned previously that there are brands out there that are cruelty free (an amount that seems to be increasing!) so a post about those brands is long overdue.

Before we dive into the beauty that is cruelty-free makeup, however, I want to briefly mention some of the well-known  brands that AREN’T cruelty-free in hopes that you will steer clear of them from here on out!

Rimmel London

Make Up For Ever (MUFE)

Yves Saint Laurent

Estee Lauder

As you can tell, there are a lot of popular drugstore brands that aren’t cruelty free. I know it can be frustrating and difficult to avoid these brands when you’re on a budget, but have no fear! There are many more cruelty-free drugstore brands that are not only ethical, but affordable and of good quality.

E.L.F. Cosmetics

Sonia Kashuk

Physicians Formula

BH Cosmetics

*NYX is owned by L’Oreal, so although they’re cruelty-free, their parent company is not. So essentially your $$ and business is going to L’Oreal. It’s totally up to you whether or not that affects your purchasing!

Too Faced (my personal favorite!)

Anastasia Beverly Hills

IMAN Cosmetics

Becca Cosmetics

Hourglass Cosmetics

Cover FX

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

Jeffree Star Cosmetics

Urban Decay*

Bite Beauty*

*Again, these brands are each owned by companies that are not cruelty-free.

If I didn’t mention a brand that you’re not sure about, you should definitely check out the

Lush Products & Reviews

Happy summertime! The birds are chirping outside my window, the sun is shining, and life feels pretty darn good.

Since it’s summertime and my skin gets a little extra loving from the sun, I thought this would be the perfect time to make a post about some of my favorite products from Lush. I’ve said this many times before, but Lush is a GREAT COMPANY! Seriously, if you haven’t checked them out yet you’re missing out!

So, without further ado, welcome to my little Lush collection!

Love Lettuce

Love Lettuce 2

 Love Lettuce: $6.95 (in stores only)

* * *

Love Lettuce was the first ever fresh face mask that I bought from Lush, and it’s perfect for my sensitive/dry/acne prone skin! It’s calming and gentle while still being a scrubby mask. I give it 3 stars out of 5 based on the fact that it doesn’t necessarily create much difference in your skin–it’s just nice to use every once in a while to give your face a little extra lovin’ and attention!

Jackie Oates

Jackie Oates 2

Jackie Oates: $16.95

* * * *

This is a colour supplement that can be used as either a tinted moisturizer, concealer, or foundation. I typically use my Jackie Oates as a foundation because it’s incredibly lightweight and it has wonderful coverage! It never looks cakey and it genuinely feels like I’ve just got a bit of moisturizer on my face. It also gives off a more dewy look, which is great for dry skin that’s in need of hydration! This product earns 4 stars from me because the only negative about it is the price; it’s a little steep for the amount of product you get (0.7 oz) but I just make sure to use it wisely!

Aqua Marina

Aqua Marina 2

Aqua Marina$12.95-$31.95

* * * *

First of all, this just might be the strangest hygienic product I have ever encountered! I decided to give Aqua Marina a try after reading the positive reviews on it, and I am extremely pleased that I did. This is what’s known as a “cleanser roll” and you essentially just take a chunk out of it and add a bit of water to it, rub it into your hands, and apply it to your face (or anywhere else you desire). The seaweed in it helps to nourish the skin, while the pink extract is useful for sensitive/irritated spots. I’m a huge fan of this cleanser and I’ll definitely be restocking whenever I run out! The only “bad” thing about this product, in my opinion, is the slight smell it gives off–it’s not awful, but it’s certainly not my favorite scent.

Celestial 2

* * * * *

Prior to Celestial, I had struggled to find a facial moisturizer that suited my skin type, but now I can’t imagine myself using anything else! Not only does this product smell wonderful (vanilla and almond, mmm) but it leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated. Since it has almond oil as an ingredient, there is a tinge of “greasiness” that comes along with it, so if your skin is naturally oily I would check out the many other Lush moisturizers that could better suite your skin type. Just a dab of this does the trick after each face wash, and your face will be thanking you in return!

Mask of Magnaminty

Mask of Magnaminty 2

Mask Of Magnaminty$12.95-$24.95

* * * * *

Minty, minty, minty! This face mask is one that will definitely wake you up and liven up your skin! Much like the Love Lettuce face mask, it is an exfoliant that goes on easy and is a sure treat for your skin. I use this mask once or twice a week because I don’t want it to overdo it (trust me, just a few times a week is plenty) and I always end up feeling rejuvenated and awake. I love everything about this mask, especially the fact that my dull skin comes to life whenever I use it.

Let me know if there are any Lush products that you’ve tried (and love) that I haven’t mentioned here! I hope this summer is one filled with laughter, memories, and happy skin!

My Favorite Cruelty Free Products

Recently I wrote a post about animal testing and cruelty free products (which you should totally check out if you haven’t already!!!) and today I decided to show you all some of my absolute favorite cruelty free products. None of these are makeup products, but I plan on doing a post about that in the near future!

Top Left

Prior to December I would wash my hair every day. Every. Single. Day. At the time I wasn’t aware of how bad that is for your hair, but over the past three month I’ve trained my hair not to need to be washed everyday! I usually shampoo about once a week, so on my off days I use dry shampoo. I’ve never been a fan of dry shampoo before; it always made me feel dandruffy and messy, but I was convinced to try out the Blow Pro Faux Dry  ($20). Long story short-I LOVE IT! It’s a powder substance, much like baby powder and all you do is shake it and then squeeze the bottle directly onto your hair and Voila! No more greasy hair!

Top Right

I started using the Yes To Tomatoes face wash ($9.99) and moisturizer ($11.19) only about a week ago, but I can already see major improvements. Not only does it clear up acne really well, but it also helps to get rid of those pesky, blotchy red spots. I use these every morning and night, and I wake up every morning with bright, glowing skin! One of the cool things about the Yes To brand is that they have different lines of products for a variety of skin types: normal/dry, sensitive, oily/acne prone, fine lines/wrinkles and uneven skin tones. And each of them are accompanied with different fruit or veggie based products!

Bottom Left

I’ll be honest with you, natural deodorants are not fun. I’ve tried three different natural deodorant sticks and I’ve been extremely unhappy with each of them-I stunk. It got to the point that I was so fed up with them and myself that I took to google to see if anyone had any advice on this particular subject. Thankfully I found a blog post about it and a lot of the people in the comments were suggesting SoapWalla. I found the SoapWalla shop on Etsy and decided to try out their deodorant cream ($14.99). It has completely changed my life for the better. It’s made of vegetable powders, clays and essential oils so it hasn’t got the most appealing scent, but it is incredibly effective. I went like, three days without showering and I still smelt amazing. Okay, maybe “amazing” is a bit over the top, but I definitely wasn’t stinky anymore!

Bottom Right

I’ve been using the Organix brand of shampoo and conditioner for quite some time now, and it easily trumps any other shampoo/conditioner I’ve used before. My favorite is the Argan Oil ($7.99) one, but there is a HUGE selection of different scents that suit different types of hair. This shampoo has never left my hair feeling greasy or straw-like or anything of the sort. Plus it smells delicious!

 Hopefully this is helpful for those of you who are in the process of adopting a cruelty free life! Have a good weekend!

Fall Makeup Look

Happy 20 days til Halloween!

Since it’s a Fall Saturday and I have absolutely nothing but homework planned for myself, I thought it would be fun to show you all one of my favorite makeup looks. I am a huge fan of dark lips so it’s no wonder that I enjoy the Autumn shades so much. Before I begin I just want to clarify that I am in no way shape or form a professional when it comes to makeup. In fact, I might actually be terrible, who knows! I thoroughly enjoy creating “art” on my face, though, and it’s something that really makes me happy. So without further or due, welcome to my first ever makeup “tutorial” :-)

Prior to putting on my foundation, I make sure to use some kind of moisturizer or toner. My favorite moisturizer is the First Aid Beauty Daily Face Cream, and I swear by this product. It’s relatively inexpensive compared to the higher brands and it just does an amazing job of moisturizing my skin without feeling sticky or greasy.

Unfortunately, I ran out of my daily face cream about a month ago, so because I’m a broke college student and it’s not on the top of my list of things I can buy, I’ve resorted to using my Lush toner, which is the Breath of Fresh Air toner.

I simply spray a small amount onto a cotton round and wipe it all over my face. Although it doesn’t give me the same effect as the moisturizer does, it still does a good job of making sure any leftover dirt gets wiped away as well as helping minimize my pores.

I’ve taken some “before” pictures, just so you can see the transformation from beginning to end. As you can tell, I’ve gotten quite pale and my eyebrows (or lack thereof) are pretty scary!

I don’t currently use a concealer as it’s not on the top of my necessities list either, so I typically just go straight to the foundation process. I use the Nars Sheer Glow Foundation in the shade Mont Blanc (Light #2) and I apply it with a simple RealTechniques expert face brush.

 I make sure to just get a tiny dab of foundation onto the brush because I’ve found that too much will result in a really cakey, unnatural look. I don’t really have a certain brush-stroke routine, I kind of just apply it however I’m feeling that day. As you can see below, there isn’t a huge difference after I’ve applied my foundation, but it definitely brings my face to life as well as covering up those annoying little stress spots!

074071Because I have a habit of touching my face throughout the day, I make sure to put on powder after the liquid foundation. I use a kabuki brush to dust on my Nars powder foundation. (I use the shade “Flesh”) The powder helps keep my foundation in place for a longer period of time.

Depending on the day and what kind of look I want to achieve, I either put on some bronzer or I just go without. Since I’m feeling extra pale today, however, I decided to apply some in order to give me a little bit of a warmer look. I use and love the Too Faced Endless Summer bronzer. It’s the perfect shade for my complexion and it’s really lightweight and long lasting.

 For the bronzer I use a Soho Contour brush and just apply it to the space right below my cheekbone and above my jaw. It’s a bit tricky to apply only because sometimes it looks too heavy, but I just make sure I blend it in really well into my temples. I usually apply a small amount of bronzer onto the very top of my forehead and also the sides of my nose to give my face some more dimension.

Now, one of my all time FAVORITE parts of my makeup routine is the blush. I am a firm believer in blush and I can never get enough! I typically switch between two blushes (again, depending on the look I want to accomplish) but for today I went with the Nars Orgasm Blush.

 As you can tell, it’s very shimmery. It’s also very pigmented, so I don’t have to apply very much in order for it to show (although sometimes I get a little crazy with my blush!) I pretty much use any type of brush for applying blush, but the one I use most would have to be the Sephora Professionnel complexion brush #53.

 Next, onto my eyebrows. It is very rare that I go a day without “putting my eyebrows on” but because I used to pluck my eyebrows terribly years ago, they are now very sparse and light. My face is much more defined when I fill my eyebrows in. I use a Sephora Eyebrow Editor kit in Nutmeg Brown. I use a small, cheap angled brush to apply it because it does the best job of staying in between the lines.

Now onto the eyes. I’ve gone with a bit of a dramatic, darker eye today because that’s just what I picture when it comes to fall looks. I’ve used both my Naked 2 Palette and my Urban Decay Palette. I chose “Snakebite” from the Naked 2 and “Deeper” from the Urban Decay. I put Deeper all over my lids with a simple eyeshadow brush and then filled in the creases with Snakebite to make it even smudgier. After that, I lined the bottom lids with a shimmy gold color just from the Naked Palette to make my eyes pop even more. After that I used a basic Ulta eyeliner (in Black/Brown) and smudged that along my top lids. I finished off my eyes with my favorite mascara, the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara, which I will continue to use as long as it is in stores, it is amazing.

And lastly, for the fun part! Like I mentioned before, I looooove dark lips so I’ve taken this opportunity to go bold. I tend to have a rather hard time finding lippies that don’t dry my lips out or rub off ridiculously quick, but the one I’m wearing today is definitely a staple in my makeup collection. NYX is a super inexpensive brand so I was a bit skeptical at first, but the quality of their lip products is unreal. They stay on for hours and never seem to dry out my lips, I hardly ever have to reapply and they’ve also got quite an impressive selection of colors to choose from. The color I’ve used today is “Paparazzi”

And viola…this look is complete! I really love how dramatic it is and I’d definitely prefer this for an evening look as opposed to just an everyday wear.

 I really hope you enjoyed this post and if you did, please please let me know. I’d love to continue doing little tutorials like this, but if it turns out that I’m actually horrid at this then I’d like to know! Have a splendid rest of your day friends. xx
